Pelvic floor postpartum defects correction refers to the surgical restoration of correct anatomy after a vaginal delivery with a spontaneous laceration or episiotomy. Although the obstetrician uses certain maneuvers to decrease the risk of trauma, there are situations when a lesion may not be fully prevented. Furthermore the severity of it may range from grade 1 (superficial) to grade 4 (all the way and including the anal sphincter). Keep in mind the anatomy is relatively distorted after the passage of a 10 cm diameter fetal head through the perineum, so adequate knowledge and anticipation of evolution may make the difference later on in life.
